Your body has helper immune cells. Some of them learn to kill damaged cells directly. In a study of 28 adults aged 70 and older, these killer helpers made up about 4 in 100 of the group in people aged 70–99, about 10 in 100 in people over 100, and about 18 in 100 in people over 110.
These cells can be counted in a normal blood sample with equipment labs already own.
We can identify them by the specific proteins they carry, inside and on their surface.
Many people over 100 have large groups of these cells that look like copies of one another — as if they have been fighting the same intruder for decades.
In the very oldest people, the cells change with age but still seem to work rather than wear out.
Whether these cells help people live longer, or just show up in people who happen to live longer.
What, exactly, these cells are attacking.
Whether having more of them would be good, harmless, or harmful.
How much of the difference is explained by ordinary things: old infections, autoimmune conditions, past cancer, medications, or simply an aging immune system.
We are not inventing a new test. Earlier work already showed how to spot these cells with standard lab equipment, by checking which proteins a cell carries. The lab sorts blood cells step by step until only the killer helper cells are left:
CD3 → CD4 → exclude CD8 → Granzyme B → Perforin → CD27 / CD28, plus additional differentiation markers recommended by the immunologists.
This is a starting research specification, not a diagnostic test.
Doctors can already take a person's own immune cells, grow them, and put them back — that is how some cancer treatments work. The key word is “own.” Putting a 110-year-old's cells into someone else can make the new body attack itself, and nobody knows what those cells are actually attacking.
These cells can also cause harm. The same killing power that fights cancer and viruses can, in some people, turn against healthy tissue. Simply giving people more of them is not obviously a good idea. Measure first.
This project is only about counting cells. But if future research proves these cells are protective, it might one day lead to ways to monitor immune health earlier in life — maybe even in younger adults — long before cancer or aging has done serious damage. That is a possibility, not a promise.
We are not offering any treatment, test, or product for younger people today. We are only saying: if the science holds up, the people who benefit most might be the ones who still have decades ahead of them.
